#unSquirrel Manifesto 4: Work Out Loud #WOLyo!

What do we share when we #unSquirrel? Well, at work, our work will do for a start. Working out loud, in the open, is about the gift of knowledge, of assisting others (often unknown) in leveraging your skills and experience and attitude. Where does one begin? Somewhere. Share a project update (as widely as possible). Engage in a conversation about a topic on which you know things, or want to know about. Suggest an idea when no-one ask for it(!) Invite others into a project to help you. Do something. Do the opposite of what so many of us do, … Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 4: Work Out Loud #WOLyo!

#unSquirrel Manifesto 3: Something To Add

The #unSquirrel process is nothing to do with fear and loathing. It is an journey of opening yourself to the world. However, sometimes, you need a place to push off from. Oftentimes, we have been told that our opinions do not count. We have been worn down. #unSquirrel is about drawing a line in the sand, and saying no more. As you share, people will question you, will complain,, they will wonder (out loud) why YOU think YOU are so important. Sometimes, you need an enemy of sorts. ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 3: Something To Add

#unSquirrel Manifesto 2: A LOUD Voice

Now we’re talking. The process of #unSquirrel begins by acknowledging, and affirming, that I am important. What percentage of us are willing to say that? It requires us to find and develop our voice. Voice, strong and true. No frog in the throat. No whisper. Clear and true. Finding our perfect pitch. If you practice, your voice gets strong, it gets LOUD, your words become insistent. This is teh beginning of change in your life, in your team, in your network. ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 2: A LOUD Voice

#unSquirrel Manifesto 1: It Is About POWER.

Why is it important to share, to #unSquirrel? Because we are all important. The knowledge, experience, perspectives we have all add value. I am heavily influenced by the pithy epiphanies of gapingvoid. The ‘empowerment’ art captures the Gack! feeling about  that term. Empowerment has been corrupted by HR – something the organization enables in us. No. the em and the ment are not required. This is about POWER yo. Power to the people. I am powerful. Say that sentence out loud. It sounds good. ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 1: It Is About POWER.

The #unSquirrel Manifesto

Everyone needs a manifesto. My own is the TMWK Manifesto that I shared here when I started the blog. It really does guide me in the work I produce and the thinking process. The TMWK Manifesto is mine, but are there others that can be given away? This one is a #WorkOutLoud process. I expanded on my #unSquirrel series of posts – of sharing more, even the minutiae, within your networks. I will go write a little on each of these in the next few posts. Today, here is the visual… ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading The #unSquirrel Manifesto

Real Miracles Make Little Noise. Essential Events Are So Simple!

As usual, waiting for serendipity to strike is time well spent. Learning happens when new neural pathways are created, and they do so when your brain exclaims: “Huh? Heh? Hmmm! Who knew?! I will squirrel that one away for another day.” So, how important is a smile? Nothing short of miraculous, of course. I had this image on my desktop for a month or more. I knew I wanted to share it, but had no context. This morning, I thought, “well, I can just share it with an upbeat note.” [I don’t take the blog too seriously that I think … Continue reading Real Miracles Make Little Noise. Change Agents Are Peasants On A Hillside, Hearts Open, Mouths Shut

Undertaking some garage spring cleaning on Easter Sunday, I found some old picture frames, one of which is worth resurrecting from storage TODAY. Ripped from the intro page of a Paul Theroux book, if memory serves, it highlights perfectly my own #FutureOfWork point of view as an advocate of change. “A peasant must stand a long time on a hillside with his mouth open before a roast duck flies in.” I have been there, for years too long, alongside colleagues too many, a powerless peasant in a system I neither controlled nor understood. Yet… “The movements which work revolutions in the world … Continue reading Change Agents Are Peasants On A Hillside, Hearts Open, Mouths Shut

The Future Of Work Is Not ‘Jobless’ – It Is ‘Jobfull’

Yesterday’s post about how networks support getting work done was reformatted from a post I did inside a walled garden ESN last year. It stirred up a few reflections from my network colleagues, and inspired today’s post. As mundane work is increasingly outsourced and automated, it does NOT mean the future of work is ‘jobless’ – au contraire, it is ‘jobfull’. Most knowledge workers will have (to have) multiple concurrent gigs. We will have to specialise further as the generic skills get automated and outsourced. Anyone sitting still and not upskilling iteratively and constantly will be lucky to survive. In … Continue reading The Future Of Work Is Not ‘Jobless’ – It Is ‘Jobfull’

Using My Online Personal Brand To Discuss Personal Branding

I was recently asked to share some thoughts with young communicators in Vancouver on kick starting your career. The event is today. Upon gathering my notes / ideas together, a core one of which is working out loud, I realised that I might have already articulated my thoughts. In other words, if I work out loud, I probably have the content online, in the open, already. So, I perused just 4-5 weeks of tweets and voila! there it all was, in plain sight. This is called walking the talk. Phew. An hour in Storify later and I had a flow … Continue reading Using My Online Personal Brand To Discuss Personal Branding

#Unsquirrel 8: Linguistic Semiotician

I once attending film school – or video and TV production school to be precise. I met many people just like me – searching for a creative breakthrough. I was trying to determine how easy access video production and editing tools (aka Apple products)  could kick start a career change. Zapher Iqbal was probably trying to do something similar, but he had a way with him that was both intoxicating and bewildering at the same time. All you need to know about him is contained on his business card: Linguistic Semiotician “Media Specialist”   Oh, and: Scriptwriter Actor Director/Producer Around … Continue reading #Unsquirrel 8: Linguistic Semiotician

#Unsquirrel 7: We Leave Home But We Never Really Move On.

Speaking of travel, “As Freud saw it, we basically spend our lives unconsciously replaying a tired old script memorized in childhood through endless rehearsals with our parents and siblings. We leave home but we never really move on. We just take the show on the road, casting everyone we meet in supporting roles…” I ain’t no analyst, y’all, so I’ll stick to what I do know. I got stuck in my life. I have been down many a knowledge and skills cul-de-sac. I have rehashed my knowledge – and my issues and insecurities – in an endless series of screechy … Continue reading #Unsquirrel 7: We Leave Home But We Never Really Move On.
