Manage For Today, Lead Into The Future?

The wholly despressing stat of the day from LeadershipABC via Jon Husband: only about 2.4% of management time (40% x 30% x 20%) is focused on building a corporate view of the future. If management is the work of today, then is leadership the work of tomorrow? The description implies forward momentum. If so, who will lead us? Who will vest their time now for tomorrow’s benefit? Who is brave enough to commit their energy to this endeavor? ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading Manage For Today, Lead Into The Future?

Commit To Something, Remain Open To Change

Let’s talk about commitment. It’s tough. There are so many temptations! Something shinier, newer, more exotic, cooler. Standing for SOMETHING asks a lot. But we all need a place to stand. A place to call home, at least for the night. I have been enjoying reading the excellent e-book from Harold Jarche ($25 from an ebookshop near you!) Jarche, in his own approach to work, is living out this search in real time. His is a search for perpetual beta and this is beautifully, subtly captured in the book’s intro: Beta is more than Alpha, as you have to affirm … Continue reading Commit To Something, Remain Open To Change

Twitter Can Be Collaborative Economy In Action

The genius that is Twitter Tom Peters is incredible. In that succinct, short puff of writing, he is able to create dynamic conversations and information flows that include many participants. This tweet was the outcome of making a statement and then curating others’ inputs about active participation. Indeed, it was active participation about active participation. Great. It began with the big three, and quickly resolved around a big six (perhaps, if twitter had longer character posts, it may have grown further!) Big SIX1. Hello.2. Thank you.3. Eye contact.4. Fierce listening.5. "What do you think?"6. "How can I help?" — Tom … Continue reading Twitter Can Be Collaborative Economy In Action

My Preferred Role: Chief Digital Officer #CDO

Those of us who follow, and perhaps instigate, “social technology” trends and practices experience a fair deal of angst. Nobody ‘gets‘ us. There is no preferred language around which we can create a movement (of change) – hence my use of ” ” around social / technology. We keep saying this is the year, then wonder when the tipping point will (ever?) happen. So, I am always looking for insight into how to define the change and the role required to make it happen. Because that role – the one that makes organizations and teams and people go BOOM! – … Continue reading My Preferred Role: Chief Digital Officer #CDO

Ha! Let’s Test This “Know The Blog, Know Me” Idea

Yesterday I wrote how this blog is a reflection of me, my set of still-forming ideas on how to change the world, my personal brand promise no less. It is a work in progress, but then so am I. If the TMWK blog is purest essence of “Jonathan”, then it stands to reason that it could become my resume / CV (especially if I get to talk about my BrandBoard, which gets me really excited…) Well, let’s test this out. It happens that once in a while I get recruiters dropping by on LinkedIn to say hi and to sense … Continue reading Ha! Let’s Test This “Know The Blog, Know Me” Idea

This Much We Know? You Will Know Me From This Blog

I have learned many things from writing the TMWK blog for a year, with more than 260 posts. Here are 10 revelations, so far. I want to separate out a key piece. Because the blog is me working out loud, sharing my knowledge, perspective, beliefs and opinions, it is the CLEAREST, most precise way you can know me (well, unless you KNOW me IRL). I say This Much We Know. I mean, this is who I am, how I move out into the world. If you read this blog, you know me, you know my motivations, my focus, my gift and … Continue reading This Much We Know? You Will Know Me From This Blog

10 Revelations From 260+ Blogs In One Year

I recently wrote: I have to go far to go at all. I need to commit fully to avoid making excuses, for being lazy. So, when I eventually began the TMWK blog I made a promise to write a post every day. I even took a week off work to get into the flow and produce. Remarkably, a year on I have posted more than 260 posts. Here is what I have learned along the way… Do or do not. There is no try, said Yoda, and who am I to argue. No-one, that’s who. So I won’t. ‘Nuff with … Continue reading 10 Revelations From 260+ Blogs In One Year

#WOLyo! Close Out: Storify Reflections On Working Out Loud

Well, I put together a Storify of the #WOLyo! experiment from last week. Storify curates the social conversation around the topic – this is about me working out loud for a whole week under the stairs at work. Unfortunately, I cannot embed the Storify here on WordPress, so click through to the slightly weird but quite interesting little experiment…it looks a little bit like this. Enjoy. ←This Much We Know.→   Continue reading #WOLyo! Close Out: Storify Reflections On Working Out Loud

One Year Of Working Out Loud = 260 Posts + REAL Community. #WOLyo!

A good little reminder of the value of blogging from Dave Winer (“I developed the first blogging software…”) from this self-explanatory post (via @elsua) Why Blog?: “The mission of blogging is to empower all of us to go directly to each other with our expertise. So if you know something as well as anyone else, or you learn something or know something that should be shared, then you should share it on your blog.” Yes, working out loud #WOLyo! is about sharing your knowledge, and it is about building community. Having reached my TMWK blog first anniversary last week, it is a worthy reminder. From … Continue reading One Year Of Working Out Loud = 260 Posts + REAL Community. #WOLyo!

A Happy #WOLyo! Outcome? Finding A First Follower.

Some learning happens in the moment, some comes in reflection and debrief. Living through the working out loud experiment last week was powerful and dense. After, I felt tired yet optimistic – that new conversations might happen, new organizational and cultural opportunities emerge. This week, a few people have been ribbing me, why aren’t you still under the stairs? It’s just not the same Jonathan, without you peering out from the gloom… A few more missed it entirely (March break holidays) and sounded genuinely disappointed (in theory, of course). A contact made the connection between what I did – a willingness to … Continue reading A Happy #WOLyo! Outcome? Finding A First Follower.

When You #WOLyo! You Recognize Confabulation When You See It

Writing down my thoughts here on the blog is both a record, an exclamation; and also an iteration. These words are a marker, that creates a line of sight to other thoughts and words. Now I have a frame of reference in which to work. Working out loud is the same process. I move out into the world, and stake a claim, then I observe what happens as I am also participating in the next iteration. It is quite the experience. Very meta. Living in this iteration, like a scene from Being John Malkovich, things can get a little confusing. … Continue reading When You #WOLyo! You Recognize Confabulation When You See It
