Here are two #14Actions for the price of one. We read everywhere about the power of failure – I am particularly taken by Tom Peters’ ridiculous acronym:
WTTMS(ASTMSUTF)W: Whoever Tries The Most Stuff (And Screws The Most Stuff Up The Fastest) Wins
— Tom Peters (@tom_peters) March 17, 2015
What we are doing here, is failing forward, learning as we go, building muscle, getting better. Of course, massive failure is not what we are looking for. We want to try out a ton of small bets, in the spirit of Dave Weinberger’s Small Pieces Loosely Joined.
Test, iterate, reflect. Or as a young professional told me recently, Ponder, Ponder, Ponder, Collaborate, Re-think, Revise, Submit.
I would say my MarComms team is making several small bets EVERY DAY. Maybe 40-50% of our conversations are about “What if…?” and maybe 50% of these lead to “What not?!” – ACTION!
I would suggest my learning curve is at its steepest it has ever been. It is getting steeper every day. This makes me change-resilient and future-proofed. It all comes from taking action, turning conversational theory – “What if…?” – to learnable / teachable outcomes.
Here are three totally unscientific things to look for in your self / team / organization:
- I (can easily) learn something EVERY DAY at work.
- My team likes to discuss new ideas / new ways of doing stuff
- My organization acknowledges and rewards breakthroughs
More #14Actions to come.
