“Media” Is The New “Brand”

Just as Share is the new Save, Media is the new Brand. We have knowledge oozing from every organizational orifice. Switching from save to share creates myriad new opportunities for innovation, project breakthroughs, leverage. Internally, we are more interconnected, friendly, collaborative. Externally? Well, when we share our genius, we are reframing our corporate brand – away from our product toward our special sauce, our very fabric. Our brand moves from monolithic logo and product uniformity / ubiquity to our intertwined narratives, personal stories, our humanity. Social brands are the ones that are making waves, the ones that go viral. David … Continue reading “Media” Is The New “Brand”

Storytelling: Vine

I am as caught up in the maelstrom of modern life as the next person; slightly anxious when any interaction or learning opportunity asks for more than a few minutes of my time. Therefore, I am excited to make Vine work for me – personally and professionally. It seems so wrong, and it feels so right. Checkmate The content is definitely F.R.E.S.H.: Fun – anything lasting 6-7 seconds is cheap and cheerful, at least. Check. Revealing – of what is on one’s mind, at least. Check. Entertaining – hard to be bored in such a space of time. Check  Shareable+Social … Continue reading Storytelling: Vine

Flow Creates Labour – Beats Work

Back-to-back-to-back dissections of @brainpickings brilliance, and more on the topic of “work”, and how to make it better, or something different altogether. Yesterday, vocation. Today, labour (UK spelling). In her review of psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi‘s book Flow:  The Psychology of Optimal Experience: “[He] has a term for the quality that sets labor apart from work: flow — a kind of intense focus and crisp sense of clarity where you forget yourself, lose track of time, and feel like you’re part of something larger. If you’ve ever pulled an all-nighter for a pet project, or even spent 20 consecutive hours composing a love letter, you’ve experienced … Continue reading Flow Creates Labour – Beats Work

Vocal About Vocation

Another stellar review from @brainpickings about something close to the TMWK heart: Fulfilling Work. Such a concept is heavy at the heart of our approach to personal branding. If we can describe to others how we manifest our genius – who we are, the skills we offer – they can better help us in the direction of our vocation. As relayed by @brainpickings: Roman Krznaric, author of How to Find Fulfilling Work says; “a vocation is not something we find, it’s something we grow — and grow into.” He further defines vocation as “a career that not only gives you fulfillment — meaning, … Continue reading Vocal About Vocation

‘O Vain Curiosity! O Curious Vanity!’

The usual, incomparable combinatorial brilliance from @brainpickings about a focus du jour, which you may have guessed from the blog title is the subject of curiosity. Absolutely, just read the original article – it will make you wonder… My interest in curiosity is its role as the base element of the TMWK Manifesto. From the article, Aristotle thought, apparently, curiosity to be “…a kind of aimless, witless tendency to pry into things that didn’t concern us.” Yes. What does concern us? This is a central conundrum in a world of “more, always more.” There are two ways to approach the … Continue reading ‘O Vain Curiosity! O Curious Vanity!’

The Future of…Work Is Learning; And Learning Is the Work

Last week, under my Curious Kids tag, I relayed this concise learning message: We use two metrics: Is your child engaged? Are they happy? If not, they’re not learning. – Matt Goldman @BlueSchoolNYC Of course, after thinking about my kids I also applied this maxim to myself, and to colleagues. It seems equally apropos. I am a huge fan of Harald Jarche’s work. His maxim, in the networked age, is: Work is learning and learning is the work. If that is true, then, just as with children, we should ensure that the work – and the learning –  allows us to … Continue reading The Future of…Work Is Learning; And Learning Is the Work

Diary of a Reflective Employer…

I was hiring recently for a social business intern. This is what I shared with the co-op faculty and student base after the fact… *********************** Where I work, we have a rolling intern position for a smart, dynamic, activated student to help us with MarComms projects covering social business (social media metrics, channel management and maintenance, research), design (websites, infographics, branding), creative work (video editing, writing), small-scale communications project management. The reason we turn to an intern is the hope / expectation that their ongoing experience in the social domain as a digital native can stimulate our approach to work. … Continue reading Diary of a Reflective Employer…

Curious Kids: Dance Like A Butterfly, Sting My Heart Like A Bee

Head down, working hard, trying to. Get. Stuff. Done. Then Lola, sweet Lola, brings me back. Be. Here. Now. Lola ” dancing like a butterfly” – and stinging my heart like a bee. vine.co/v/bUrrUib0Feb — Jonathan Anthony (@ThisMuchWeKnow) April 19, 2013 If only I could remember to Vine with the camera the right way round! ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading Curious Kids: Dance Like A Butterfly, Sting My Heart Like A Bee

Did I Just Pat Microsoft On The Head?

I am a confirmed fan of Yammer, my Enterprise Social Network (ESN) of choice. I suppose I might be considered a super-user, in that I sponsored Yammer in my organization, use it every day, and am the main user in my network. So the above may colour my perspective, but reading an overview of how Microsoft is using Yammer inside the company, I felt like giving them a hug and saying “It’s OK, everything will be alright. It will work out in the end.” It just seems weird that the company that owns (through a $1.2b purchase) the(?) leading ESN … Continue reading Did I Just Pat Microsoft On The Head?

Sponsor Disruption 5: Show-Up

The last part of sponsoring disruption is to <Show-Up> differently. It is about showcasing how you have worked through <Model> <Upskill> <Bulk-Up> <Polemicize> and WOW – look at me now! Prove that it was all worthwhile. By now, you are working differently, networking more, have more knowledge at hand and beyond your fingertips. You are social. Hey, maybe even people like you more (no promises there). You made some bold promises and you delivered them. Now, take it to the proverbial NEXT LEVEL. Yes, it’s that time. The NEXT LEVEL You have moved through the disruption and are modelling the … Continue reading Sponsor Disruption 5: Show-Up
