#unSquirrel Manifesto 2: A LOUD Voice

Now we’re talking. The process of #unSquirrel begins by acknowledging, and affirming, that I am important. What percentage of us are willing to say that? It requires us to find and develop our voice. Voice, strong and true. No frog in the throat. No whisper. Clear and true. Finding our perfect pitch. If you practice, your voice gets strong, it gets LOUD, your words become insistent. This is teh beginning of change in your life, in your team, in your network. ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 2: A LOUD Voice

#unSquirrel Manifesto 1: It Is About POWER.

Why is it important to share, to #unSquirrel? Because we are all important. The knowledge, experience, perspectives we have all add value. I am heavily influenced by the pithy epiphanies of gapingvoid. The ‘empowerment’ art captures the Gack! feeling about  that term. Empowerment has been corrupted by HR – something the organization enables in us. No. the em and the ment are not required. This is about POWER yo. Power to the people. I am powerful. Say that sentence out loud. It sounds good. ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading #unSquirrel Manifesto 1: It Is About POWER.

The #unSquirrel Manifesto

Everyone needs a manifesto. My own is the TMWK Manifesto that I shared here when I started the blog. It really does guide me in the work I produce and the thinking process. The TMWK Manifesto is mine, but are there others that can be given away? This one is a #WorkOutLoud process. I expanded on my #unSquirrel series of posts – of sharing more, even the minutiae, within your networks. I will go write a little on each of these in the next few posts. Today, here is the visual… ←This Much We Know.→ Continue reading The #unSquirrel Manifesto

Manifestos…To Understand: Responsive Org

As with yesterday’s Manifesto of the Cloud, the Responsive Org Manifesto is less one to live by as to understand. The shifting sands of organizational design and experience behooves any worker who wants to remain relevant and politically successful in their organization to ‘get the future.’ I happen to know some of the #ResponsiveOrg crew, and their mission is a meaningful one. They understand that technology will only get you so far. The technology is already available to fundamentally change organizations (for the better!) This technology flattens hierarchies, creates live and living communities of practice that can start up and dissolve … Continue reading Manifestos…To Understand: Responsive Org

Manifestos…To Understand: The Cloud Revolution

Early on in the blog, I wrote a few posts about manifestos that proved quite popular. I reviewed them at the end of the year with this thought: People like directions. Me too. I like simple, evocative calls-to-action; they stir the Head-Heart-Hand. Manifestos drive conversation – it is not necessarily about believing everything in them; but using them as a riff / filter for your own thoughts and ideas. In the interim, I have found a few more manifestos. Let’s continue the series, and also continue to use them to riff on our own thoughts and ideas… I discovered The Cloud … Continue reading Manifestos…To Understand: The Cloud Revolution

Change Agents Are Peasants On A Hillside, Hearts Open, Mouths Shut

Undertaking some garage spring cleaning on Easter Sunday, I found some old picture frames, one of which is worth resurrecting from storage TODAY. Ripped from the intro page of a Paul Theroux book, if memory serves, it highlights perfectly my own #FutureOfWork point of view as an advocate of change. “A peasant must stand a long time on a hillside with his mouth open before a roast duck flies in.” I have been there, for years too long, alongside colleagues too many, a powerless peasant in a system I neither controlled nor understood. Yet… “The movements which work revolutions in the world … Continue reading Change Agents Are Peasants On A Hillside, Hearts Open, Mouths Shut

Twitter Can Be Collaborative Economy In Action

The genius that is Twitter Tom Peters is incredible. In that succinct, short puff of writing, he is able to create dynamic conversations and information flows that include many participants. This tweet was the outcome of making a statement and then curating others’ inputs about active participation. Indeed, it was active participation about active participation. Great. It began with the big three, and quickly resolved around a big six (perhaps, if twitter had longer character posts, it may have grown further!) Big SIX1. Hello.2. Thank you.3. Eye contact.4. Fierce listening.5. "What do you think?"6. "How can I help?" — Tom … Continue reading Twitter Can Be Collaborative Economy In Action

#Unsquirrel 2: The Fruits Of Idleness

Dang! I should unsquirrel to myself a bit more often. Here I was, on the last day of 2013, writing about flanerie: How could it be that this word, this idea, this approach to life has passed me by all these years?!… it’s a flâneur’s life for me. And yet, all along, squirreled away, hidden, I had this nugget from printed publication unknown, from the German Marxist commentator Walter Benjamin (from The Arcades Project): Basic to flanerie, among other things, is the idea that the fruits of idleness are more precious than the fruits of labour. Amidst the existential angst of … Continue reading #Unsquirrel 2: The Fruits Of Idleness

The #SocBiz Dogme Manifesto

Researching this series of posts on modern art and social business, I revisited a post I wrote about the Dogme manifesto (and its relationship to other manifestos). One portion seemed particularly apropos to the journey of social / networked business many of us are on. Herein extracted: Festen, the original Dogme film, was an utter delight to me. I believed “I could do that!” and I could (at least from a technical perspective, notwithstanding my lack of creative genius.) Similar to the Incomplete Manifesto for Growth, Dogme says do not (over)embellish. Just do it. Like the Passionate Creative Worker, it says blaze new trails; never settle. The Cult of Done Manifesto says … Continue reading The #SocBiz Dogme Manifesto

MOOC 1, University 0.

I must be stupid. I have two degrees, yet I think education is completely overrated. I vowed after completing my Masters, ‘that’s it with studying!’ As my kids enter formal schooling, I am moving the other way – less structure, less rote, fewer rules of engagement, more serendipity, less linear, more networked, more curiosity, less right and wrong, more maybe and let’s see and who knows? The one-person university Maria Popova records Frank Lloyd Wright’s lament:  “The present education system is the trampling of the herd.” Brain Pickings, she continued, “became the record of my alternative learning, of that cross-disciplinary curiosity that … Continue reading MOOC 1, University 0.

TMWK Best Of 2013 3: Manifestos To Live By…

People like directions. Me too. I like simple, evocative calls-to-action; they stir the Head-Heart-Hand. Manifestos drive conversation – it is not necessarily about believing everything in them; but using them as a riff / filter for your own thoughts and ideas. I wrote a series of Manifestos To Live By… posts, the most popular of which has been 4 Manifestos To Live By… #2 – The Cult Of Done. Obviously, the one I am most proud of is the This Much We Know Manifesto – very much a work in progress as I try to articulate my point of view and my value. I … Continue reading TMWK Best Of 2013 3: Manifestos To Live By…

Change Agents Of The World Unite

Let’s start at the end. Change Agents navigate the choppy waters and uneven terrain toward the future of work. They invite you along for the journey – as guides, as co-conspirators, and treasure seekers. They are in the vanguard. This puts them ahead of the pack. It means they are ready. It also makes them vulnerable. There are bruises, and battles, yet Change Agents still ask: How can I help? The currency of social business is a deep understanding of emergent themes and practices in culture, technology, organization design, and the impacts on, and motivations of, individuals. Change Agents are … Continue reading Change Agents Of The World Unite
